One thing I have noticed is a large amount of customers leave with offering the greeting "have a nice day" an American customer service textbook phrase.

I can normally split the pack between those that seemingly mean it (sometimes using alternative phrases such as "have a nice rest of your day" or "enjoy the rest of your day") and those that appear to robotically mutter it nervously as they anticipate the barista to say it to them.

I, as a British person , do not use this phrase at all, as it comes across as insincere and potentially triggering to someone that is having a terrible day.

Sometimes I can tell customers leave annoyed when they realise I haven't said the phrase they expected me to.

I'm hoping one sip of their drink boosts their mood.
