Everyone has surely heard about the case of McDonalds being sued for millions of dollars over a hot coffee spilled on a customer leaving them with significant burns. At Starbucks (and probably everywhere else for the same reasons) we have to hand-off drinks with their lids attached - including for cold drinks (for food hygiene reasons) - so it is one area we are unable to adjust to customer preference.

This is not us being difficult or rude. Customers assume their competence much more than the reality on-the-day when I have witnessed incidents. There is a disconnect between what your mind thinks is capable and the strength of your body.

Dehydration, low blood sugar levels, dizziness from medication, their eye sight, being accidentally nudged by another customer and reacting to a drink either being hotter or colder than expected are very common reasons for customers to misjudge the task or get disorientated unexpectedly resulting in spilling or dropping their drink.

The hot liquid especially when combined with sugary syrups can genuinely cause significant burns and scalding. We are trying to save you from yourself. A lid is a bit like a face mask, it just helps contain the spread rather than stop the output entirely. Of course, we are also protecting that drink going airborne and splashing another customer... so just accept the lid, it is there for a reason.

You can always take it off and bin it. Even immediately afterwards.
